Abuse victims often hold their breath, normally your brain will remind you to breathe. But with your brain already experiencing trauma, it won't remind you to. The brain then associates this with drowning. That only causes anxiety & fear to grow. Your brain will target this as danger forcing you to feel terrified & the need to flee. You need to maintain control at this time. Tell your brain that here is a safe place & there is no danger here.
